What an area of knowledge can know and explain—that’s the main question. Does the scope stay the same even as the methods change? As you may have guessed, the answer is not an easy yes or no. It’s more of a “sometimes, but…” That’s where your essay lives.

Does the AOK’s goal stay the same when methods change, like when new tools, systems, or ways of looking at data come out? If not, does it start asking different questions?
Ask the Right Questions
Compare and analyze the main aspects of this prompt. You are being asked to think about consistency vs. change. Don’t just talk about changes in methods. Instead, you should ask:
- Has the AOK’s goal changed too?
- Are we just making old ideas better or starting from scratch?
- Does that limit or expand what counts as valid knowledge when methods change?
Do the smart thing and make a T-chart for each AOK you’re considering. Write down how the methods have changed on one side. Also, ask if the scope stayed the same. This keeps you grounded and stops you from making any broad statements.

Yet, the overarching goal (explaining natural phenomena) arguably hasn’t budged. You can talk about the scientific method and paradigm shifts (hello, Kuhn!). Also, you can use examples like the shift from classical mechanics to quantum theory. Does that shift alter the scope? Maybe not completely—but it surely expands it.
History is another goldmine. Think about how methods have evolved—oral histories, written chronicles, digital archives, or even AI tools used for analysis. At the same time, has the scope of history shifted from just kings and wars to now include the voices of marginalized groups? That could suggest the scope does, in fact, change.
As for Ways of Knowing, you’re going to want to bring in reason and language for the sciences, as well as emotion and language for history. The way we understand the past is heavily colored by how we interpret language and how we feel about what we find. Science, meanwhile, leans heavily on rational frameworks—even as those frameworks evolve.
Avoid arts or religious knowledge systems unless you feel super confident. They’re abstract enough that drawing clear lines between method and scope is harder, and TOK rewards clarity over poetry.
Real-Life Situations for November 2025 TOK Prompt 4
Let’s stay realistic. A good TOK essay is not based on hypotheticals or cartoonishly vague anecdotes. You want genuine, tangible, particular, rich enough to dissect real-life events—not hypothetical ones. Ideally, you want at least one strong RLS for each AOK.
mRNA Vaccines and Paradigm Shifts
From the natural sciences, one particularly notable case is the fast growth of mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 epidemic. Usually, conventional vaccinations employ inactivated or weakened viruses. mRNA vaccines employ genetic instructions to prompt the body to create a benign version of the virus’s protein.
